Dust... explores the intersection of movement and philosophy, mathematics and science. Dust... examines some of the most influential theories and ideas that have led us to our present being through movement, sound, video illustrations and animations, and text. First, by proposing a series of numbers as experienced through movement, the work explores the equations of Newtonian mechanics, the recurrence of the Fibonacci sequence, and the golden ratio, before proposing a consideration of the Computational Theory of the Mind, a dominant paradigm in psychology and neuroscience. After exploring whether our minds are similar to the inner workings of a computer, and the implications this comparison holds for the concepts of free will and rational choice, Dust... breaks away from the mathematical theorems to reveal the joy of just being.
Poetry for the piece was written by Evert Huston, an award-winning actor from NYC and recipient of the 2012 Special Jury Prize from Film North at the Huntsville International Film Festival, along with The Saunderson Award, the RBC Apprentice Actor Award, and the Tony Van Bridge Award from Canada's Shaw Festival. He was also the recipient of the Marguerite Ruth Dow Award in Drama, the 2002 and the 2001 University College Drama Program Bursary along with the 2002 and the 2001 J.P. Bickell Foundation Award in Drama. The voice of Dust.. is nonother than actor Bruno Camacho Jiménez, a local Costa Rican acclaimed actor who has entertained audiences in New York, Mexico City, Costa Rica, Panama City, Quito, and Bogotá, with groups such as NET, Teatro Abya, MÁQUINA Teatro, ExÁnima Danza Plástica, among others. The Dust.. original score was composed by Rock Torres Rick who has over 20 years of experience working in New York and Los Angeles, working with an extensive list of music genres, artists, and producers including G-Eazy, CD9, Rhett Lawrence, Tat Tong, and Swing on 4.
Included in the show are two dance films choreographed and directed by international guest artists; Mist Me by Karen Kaeja and Tampopo Redux by Mistaya Hemingway. Roger Cuadrado, a professional Spanish dancer will also grace the stage alongside the new Costa Rican company DEKO.
Karen’s awards include the 2022 George Luscombe Mentorship Award, the 2020 Dance Ontario Lifetime Achievement Award, CDA “I Love Dance” Community Award and Paul D. Fleck Fellowship for Innovation. A finalist for the TAF Celebration of Cultural Life Award, the TAF Muriel Sherrin Award for International Achievement, NOW’s Best Local Choreographer, and Best Dance Company, she is twice named one of NOW’s top 10 dance artists. A 7-time Dora Mavor Moore nominee, her work Crave received 4 Dora nominations, winning one. So it is with great thanks and gratitude that Dance Equations is able to share her film Mist Me with Costa Rica Audiences.
Likewise, Mistaya brings her expertise and artistry to the show, Mistaya Hemingway has danced with the Dutch National Ballet, Alberta Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and La La La Human Steps, where she danced as a soloist for nine years. Her film Tampopo Redux explores the sensual, tactile, and at times humorous relationship between the body and food. Inspired by the Japanese cult-classic 1980s film, Tampopo, this short dance film is a collaborative, improvisational experience for the dancers, the camera, and the viewer- an explosion of color, sensuality, and dragonfruit.
Adding to this stellar cast is Roger Cuadrado, who danced professionally with the Czech National Ballet, and also with acclaimed contemporary choreographers: Jiri Kyliàn, Alexander Ekman, Ohad Naharin, George Balanchine, Glen Tetley, Mauro Bigonzetti, and Douglas Lee. He has had the opportunity to dance on international tours with companies in Russia, the United Kingdom, Spain, Japan, China, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, Oman, Finland, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Austria, among others. Roger was awarded the Positano Prize in Dance (Italy) in 2020 for being the best international dancer. He will be dancing a solo dance piece titled Left behind, by Fabio Adorisio, which visualizes the impact of memories and experiences on an individual. Similar to a journey, the dancer confronts these past feelings and has to decide whether he is still dedicated to their influence or can move on and leave them behind. Either way, it becomes clear that a part of them will remain in him forever.
The show closes with a festival favorite choreographed by Miranda Abbott called Flight. This first appeared in the Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival. The piece, because of its humor and lively nature, soon became a festival favorite, and Miranda and her company were invited to present the work at the festival for several years. The piece became a signature piece in her show Flight and Other Such Adventures which hosted shows for thousands of school children, welcoming them into the world of contemporary dance.
Special thanks to the DEKO dancers without whom this show would not be possible.
